It's fair to say that the last 20 years have marked the blooming of the
American consumer's love affair with wine. In 1979, almost all the wine sold in
this country came with screw caps, California wine came in jugs, and wine
collectors were an elite few. And a young couple with a modest ambition to leave
the New York City rat race and start their own business in the suburbs was
taking a gamble when they bet that there were enough other wine enthusiasts to
support a direct mail venture selling wine paraphernalia.
Today, the company they started has published more than 300 million catalogs, and has been a pioneer not only in bringing wine-service products to a broad market but in providing widespread consumer access to wine preservation, wine storage, and electronic commerce.
