Alvar Aalto (1898-1976) ist einer der bedeutendsten Architekten Finnlands. Mit
seinem Werk hat er das zeitgenössische, architektonische Denken seiner Zeit
nachhaltig beeinflußt. Als Vertreter des plastischen Stils wurde er bekannt
durch seine großzügigen Wohn-, Zweck- und Schulbauten. Nüchtern und rational
entwarf er strenge Linien und klare Formen, an Originalität fehlte es ihm
unterdess nicht. Vielmehr brach er auf geniale Weise mit den gängigen
Vorstellungen und Traditionen Anfang des 20. Jahrhunderts.
Später fließen immer mehr organische Formen in seine Architektur ein. Aalto
macht sich auf besondere Art die naturgegebene Umgebung zu Nutzen, was zu seinem
Markenzeichen wird. In Helsinki, das bis dato fest in der Hand diverser
Oldschool Architekten war, gewann er 1927 erstmals einen Wettbewerb und plante
daraufhin die Viipuri-Bibiliothek in Wyborg. Schnell machte er sich einen
internationalen Namen und gemeinsam mit seiner Frau Aino Marsio nahm er
