Talking Music: Conversations with John Cage, Philip Glass, Laurie Anderson, and
Five Generations of American Experimental Composers:
Talking Music is comprised of substantial original conversations with seventeen
American experimental composers and musicians-including Milton Babbitt, Pauline
Oliveros, Steve Reich, Meredith Monk, and John Zorn-many of whom rarely grant
interviews. The author skillfully elicits candid dialogues that encompass
technical explorations; questions of method, style, and influence; their
personal lives and struggles to create; and their aesthetic goals and artistic
declarations. Herein, John Cage recalls the turning point in his career; Ben
Johnston criticizes the operas of his teacher Harry Partch; La Monte Young
attributes his creative discipline to a Morman childhood; and much more. The
results are revelatory conversations with some of America's most radical musical
innovators., Reference ; General ; Music / Songbooks, Talking Music:

Joy Askew:
Joy Askew has performed with the likes of Joe Jackson, Peter Gabriel and Laurie
Anderson. But this singer is more than just an able side-woman: Askew takes to
center stage like a bird to air. Her slow-moving, meticulously crafted songs
wash over you with a seductive, buried urgency that evokes open skies and
rain-washed two-lane highways. Lovely stuff.

definitive account of the current technological, political and aesthetic shifts
in performance art that mark its transition to the 21st century. Performance art

multiculturalism or globalism. The desire for direct engagement with today's
most prominent artists explains the wide appeal of performance art to the
expanding audiences for new art. Artists such as Mariko Mori, Paul McCarthy,
Matthew Barney and Forced Entertainment can now be seen in the context of
previous innovators, from the Dadaists to Laurie Anderson. Brief Description:

Life On A String:
One of the most successful artists ever to straddle the line between avant-garde
performance art, multimedia, and popular music, Laurie Anderson makes her
Nonesuch debut with Life On A String, her first release in six years. Musically,
Life On A String's intensity is heightened by its spare sound. It draws both on
the emotive power of strings--Anderson plays violin on a record for the first
time since her debut Big Science--and the rich variety of rhythmic beats she has
created. Among her compositions is a rare instrumental ( Here With You ). The
album, which Anderson co-produced with Hal Willner includes guest appearances by
musicians Bill Frisell, Dr. John, Lou Reed and Van Dyke Parks, among others.
Laurie Anderson, in describing her lyrical approach to the new album, said I
tried to make the language plain and observational. I tried to be simple. Just
to say what I saw. It is dark. But I'm glad about that, because there are plenty
of cheerful songs around.

Poetry at Stake: Lyric Aesthetics and the Challenge of Technology:
Taking seriously Guillaume Apollinaire's wager that twentieth-century poets
would one day 'mechanize' poetry as modern industry has mechanized the world,
Carrie Noland explores poetic attempts to redefine the relationship between
subjective expression and mechanical reproduction, high art and the world of
things. Noland builds upon close readings to construct a tradition of diverse
lyricists--from Arthur Rimbaud, Blaise Cendrars, and Rene Char to contemporary
performance artists Laurie Anderson and Patti Smith--allied in their concern
with the nature of subjectivity in an age of mechanical reproduction., Poetry ;

Utah Phillips:
Card-carrying Wobbly and raconteur of the rural Southwest, Utah Phillips is
revered for his unadorned but intensely lyrical balladry and his ability to
engage audiences with the wisdom and down-home bonhomie of an old-timey
cracker-barrel philosopher. More recently, Phillips has earned the adulation of
angst-folky Ani Difranco. The result -- 1996's the past doesn't go anywhere
-- is unlike anything Phillips has done before: a spoken word sculpture (with
Laurie Anderson's fingerprints all over it) set against a backdrop of
Funk/rap/country rhythms.

The Feminine:
This book is an essay on the feminine, composed almost entirely of paintings and
photographs of women. On the juxtaposition, film director Sergei Eisenstein
notes 'By the comination of two 'depictables' is achieved the representation of
something that is graphically undepictable.' This is the intention of The
Feminine. Looking at it, one enters a special world, a world in which meaning is
revealed by the interplay of images, a world in which the arrangement of the
images is as important as the images themselves. The women represented range
from young to old, and art works date from the 13th century to the modern era.
Among the artists included are photographers Jacques Henri Lartigue, Man Ray,
and Clementina Hawarden; painters include Gustav Klimt, Joaquin Sorolla and
Sandro Botticelli. A few pages of quotes have been included by the author to
illuminate his work with words, where words are appropriate. Authors include
Anais Nin, Colette, Laurie Anderson and Emily Dickinson., Art & Art Instruction

In My Stairwell:
The stairwell of New York photographer Mark Seliger may be unadorned, decidedly
offstage, and very small, but the creativity of so many talented people jammed
into one space is enormous. Each artist, dancer, and writer brings a different
personality to the room, and Seliger captures that spirit in each photograph.
From Paul McCartney to Susan Sarandon, from Tom Wolfe to Lou Reed, all of the
participants in this project demonstrate the greatest integrity and highest
creativity in their crafts. Other memorable portraits include those of Tony
Hawk, Richard Serra, Bill Irwin, Laurie Anderson, and Lenny Kravitz. All 75
photographs were printed with a turn-of-the-century platinum palladium
photographic process, a procedure that results in a highly detailed, rich
texture. The images are printed in tritone. Fred Woodward, the prominent New
York designer of Rolling Stone and such ground-breaking books as Crazy, Sexy,
Cool, is the mastermind behind the book's cutting-edge design., Photography ;

Edgard Varese:
French born New Yorker, Edgard Varese sound-tracked industrial society just as
Debussy had more pastoral settings.<P>Frank Zappa's boyhood hero, inspiration to
The Grateful Dead, Chicago and Laurie Anderson, revered by Stravinsky,
Stockhausen, Cage and Charlie Parker, Varese saw music as an 'art-science' in
which machines, not instruments would extend the sonic vocabulary.<P>Ionization
(1933), for percussion and sirens, Deserts (1954), Density 21.5 for platinum
flute, The One All Alone, a science fiction opera, and Espace, written in aid of
Spanish Civil War revolutionaries brought critical acclaim. Then followed 15
'wilderness years' which ended in 1958 when his symphony, Poeme Electronique was
played through 400 revolving loudspeakers at the Brussels Exposition., Biography

Mark Seliger in My Stairwell:
Fred Woodward, the prominent New
York designer of Rolling Stone and such ground-breaking books as Crazy, Sexy,
Cool, is the mastermind behind the book's cutting-edge design.

Why The Long Face?:
Strahlende Seelen: zweites Album der berühmten US-Folk-Schwestern. The Roches
a. mit Paul Simon, Philip Glass, Was Not Was und Laurie Anderson.
Warum also ein langes Gesicht machen? 'Why The Long Face' lotet
sensibel das Gleichgewicht zwischen Komik und Tragik aus, zwischen Hoffnung und
Verzweiflung, dem Politischen und dem Privaten. Neben eigenen Songs findet, Why

Night Life:
For the last year I`ve been on the road with a solo performance. Every night
another theater, another hotel room. Gradually my dreams became wild, vivid,
more and more relentless. Headless singing squirrels, vast empty spaces, bizarre
clatterings and invasions. My own dark and private theater was slowly taking
over. I began to draw these dreams literally out of self-defense. I kept the
computer drawing tablet next to the bed and tried to capture them in their most
raw state. After many months of drawing my dreams I was drawn into the odd
language and logic of the images. Often I drew my own head in the foreground.
What did that mean? Who`s watching who? Often the dreams were alternate versions
of the day`s events. Sometimes they were heavily charged atmospheres,
sensations, emotions. Depictions of bewilderment, ecstasy, weightlessness,
abandonment, freedom."" Night Life is Laurie Anderson`s diary of a year of
dreams. Its pages re-create each night`s mental show as a work of art, em
ploying Anderson`s skill in theater, lyrics and narrative to investigate the
workings of her mind in the languages of dreams, drawings and text. (2007. 96 p.

Ann Hamilton (Hardback) - Simon, Joan:
ISBN: 0810941600 Stock status: Temporarily out of stock Published: Apr 2002
Format: Hardback Pages: 280 Internationally acclaimed artist Ann Hamilton
creates sensory environments filled with huge quantities of material substances
- 10 tons of Linotype slugs, 750,000 pennies (the budget of a project,
translated into the smallest monetary unit and laid into a skin of honey),
48,000 blue work pants and shirts. In the last decade, Hamilton has increasingly
incorporated sound, video, and audience interaction in a way that aligns her
more closely with performance artists such as Laurie Anderson than with
traditional sculptors. Her multimedia works have been widely exhibited - from
The Museum of Modern Art to the Venice Biennale - and she has been awarded
MacArthur and NEA Visual Arts Fellowships. Her process-oriented installations,
perhaps more accurately called tableaux vivants, are so particular to their
sites that, after their initial showing, they survive only in photographs,
sketches, and other descriptive documents. This book, the first major volume
devoted to Hamilton's work, thus will be the only complete documentation of all
of her temporal projects, as well as her photographs and early textile art.
Brief Description: This is the first comprehensive study of Ann Hamilton's
theatrical, massive sensory installation work. It documents all of her temporal
projects, as well as her photographs and early textile art.

Antony and the Johnsons:
Antony Hegarty is, without question, a gentle giant. One critic described him as
"having a rugby player's build but the face of a medieval saint." And indeed,
the hulking, 6'4" British singer looks like an overgrown version of the
baby-faced actor Bud Cort (of Harold and Maude fame), while his singing
has been compared most often -- and not erroneously -- to Nina Simone's. He's
also a favorite of some of the most interesting tastemakers of the past thirty
years, including Laurie Anderson, Boy George and Lou Reed -- and he beat out
Coldplay, MIA and the Kaiser Chiefs to win Britain's prestigious Mercury Music
Prize in 2005. (Judge Simon Frith said the group won because, "It's not like any
album I've heard before or since.") But accolades aside, Antony owes perhaps his
biggest debt to traditional American gospel. Take one listen to Mahalia
Jackson's shuffling rhythms, piano accompaniment and grave, vibrato-laden
vocals, and you'll get close to the source of Antony's inspiration -- though he
takes it in his own unique direction.

Smile of the Buddha: Eastern Philosophy and Western Art from Monet to Today
(Hardback) - Baas, Jacquelynn:
ISBN: 0520242084 Published: Sep 2005 Format: Hardback Pages: 310 Smile of the
Buddha explores the influences of Asian world-views and particularly Buddhism on
the art of Europe and America in the modern era. In an informative and
perceptive introduction and essays on twenty well-known artists, Jacquelynn Baas
analyzes how the teachings of the Buddha offered alternatives to Western
intellectual conceptions of art and traces the various ways this inspiration
materialized in artworks. The influence of Buddhism on art from the last quarter
of the nineteenth century to the present has been greater than historians and
critics generally recognize, Baas claims. Considering essential questions about
the relationship of art and life, this timely and beautifully illustrated book
expands our perspective on how spirituality and creativity inspire and inform
one another. Baas's insights and the images she presents give the reader a new
understanding and appreciation of a diverse array of Western artworks. Contents:

Art and Feminism - Reckitt, Helena;Phelan, Peggy:
ISBN: 071484702X Published: Sep 2006 Format: Paperback Pages: 304 In the late
1960s feminism exploded into popular consciousness. As women began to carve
their own spaces in politics and the workplace, so too they demanded to enter
art history - where traditionally they had chiefly featured as anonymous bodily
subjects of art produced, patronized, collected and theorized by men. Indeed
most feminist art until the late 1970s was preoccupied with re-presenting the
female body, ranging from the guerilla street actions of Valie Export to the
naked performances of Hannah Wilke, to Ana Mendieta's outlines of absent female
bodies in the landscape. The emerging debates surrounding new feminist art were
fiercely discussed: should women artists compete with men or exclude them? Is
the naked female body, even in feminist artists' performances, still an
objectification of women? From the 1960s to the millennium, "Art and Feminism"
traces the changing art practices, art historical debates, manifestos,
challenges, rediscoveries and reawakenings that characterize the dynamic,
continuing dialogue between feminism and contemporary art. "Art and Feminism"
explores the spaces "between" feminism and art, uncovering a shifting,
reciprocal relationship. Accessibly and comprehensively ranging across the whole
spectrum of art practice and theory, this volume includes the key texts of each
period, ranging from the polemics of Germaine Greer and Valerie Solanas to
definitions of new artforms by Lucy R. Lippard, to Laura Mulvey's influential
film theory, to Craig Owen's Postmodern criticism, as well as rare original
artists' statements and reviews. The diverse range of artists featured includes
Laurie Anderson, Vanessa Beecroft, Louise Bourgeois, Sophie Calle, Marlene
Dumas, Tracey Emin, Coco Fusco, Nan Goldin, Mona Hatoum, Jenny Holzer, Rebecca
Horn, Barbara Kruger, Yayoi Kusama, Shirin Neshat, Yoko Ono, Adrian Piper,

Mister Heartbreak:
Seldom, if ever, have panethnic musical components been so seamlessly
integrated with high-sci instrumental technology as on Mister Heartbreak,
a record that, in its pure sonic preoccupations, makes performance artist Laurie
Anderson's 1982 debut LP, Big Science, sound like a simple pop album.
Assisted by such unlikely collaborators as Peter Gabriel, King Crimson guitarist
Adrian Belew and drummers Anton Fier and David Van Tieghem, Anderson and her
coproducers, Bill Laswell of Material and longtime associate Roma Baran, have
fashioned a series of meticulously layered tonal collages that combine
Synclaviers and Vocoders with such exotic instruments as kayagum, shekere and
ikonkolo. The result is gorgeous to listen to and, as always with the verbally
oriented Anderson, broadly evocative in its punny, open-ended lyrics. From the
protagonist of "Sharkey's Day" – who, confronted by nature's rich tapestry,
says, "You know? I'd rather see this on TV. Tones it down" – to the incorporeal
persona of "Gravity's Angel," who flies in through a window to advise that "the
higher you fly, the faster you fall," Mister Heartbreak surveys a musical
dreamscape of unlimited suggestiveness.
It is not, of course, a rock & roll album – although there is an eclectic pop
consciousness at work in "Excellent Birds," the delicately funky duet with
Gabriel, and in the gently cooing "Sharkey's Day," which Anderson playfully
trashes in a concluding reprise called "Sharkey's Night," with the vocal turned
over to author William Burroughs, doing his best W.C. Fields squawk. Mainly,
though, Mister Heartbreak is a seductive soundtrack for a mental movie
that seems likely to enjoy a long run in the right heads – maybe yours. Take a

Walking With Thee:
Don't let song titles such as "Sunlight Bathes Our Home" and "Welcome" fool you.
On Clinic's second album, Walking With Thee, sunlight appears about as
frequently as it does on a dismal winter afternoon in Clinic's home city of
Liverpool. Singer Ade Blackburn beckons, "Come fill yourself with dreams," on
the opening "Harmony," but the vaguely unsettling mood has already been set:
mournful Ennio Morricone melodica, keyboards that breathe with the asthmatic
insistence of Laurie Anderson's "O Superman," and pensive electric piano.
Fortunately, Clinic do more with these badly lit vibes than merely curl up and
wallow in them. Instead, they squeeze cold-sweat, clenched-teeth tension into
their cryptic rock, evoking all at once the dapper menace of Tindersticks, the
deadpan decadence of the Velvet Underground and the thrift-shop psychedelia of
the Beta Band.
No matter how spooky they are, the grooves bite, from the modified
calypso of "The Equaliser" to the hurtling "Pet Eunoch," in which a Doberman
guitar snaps at its leash while a pianist pounds nails. Carl Turney's sharp
cymbal work sizzles in the foreground, like a rattlesnake suddenly looming out
of the bushes, while Blackburn's voice hovers in the shadows; guitars and
keyboards drift like heavy storm clouds. "Disintegrate!" Blackburn hisses
through a momentary gap in "Welcome." The oppressive organ drone of the title
song leaves him gasping, and as "The Vulture" circles, the singer breaks into a
feverish mantra. The closing lullaby of lyrical guitar and lilting background
voices promises a respite. But then Blackburn purrs, "You're all made up for the
wars," and you realize the track, like much of Walking With Thee, is all
the more disquieting for its prettiness.

Home Of The Brave:
Performance artist Laurie Anderson is best known for her United States
Live, a staggeringly witty, epic-length (more than six hours spread over two
days in its staged version) dissection of American politics and popular culture
that established her as a major art-world figure who could operate successfully
on the fringes of pop. She's still not making music that fits into any
commercial radio format, but she does seem to be getting more comfortable
manipulating traditional pop forms in her pieces. The music on this soundtrack
is her loosest yet. It's as if her refusal to make Big Statements this time out
– something that dragged down parts of United States – has liberated her.
Sure, she can be self-referential, but usually it's to poke fun at herself and
her image. For instance: a friend asks her, "Are you talking to me?/Or are you
just practicing/For one of those performances of yours?"
Unfortunately, Anderson may have already said everything she has to say.
Home of the Brave trades on the same issues that pervade the more ambitious
(and coherent) United States, discussing American culture in the same
terms and using the same illustrations to make her point. The new album even
reprises one track from that epic. Anderson's remake of " 'Language Is a Virus
from Outer Space' – William S. Burroughs" is the closest she comes to a straight
pop song, and it could work on a slightly off-center dance floor. But even
though it's the best and funniest song here, it's four years old. If Anderson
can loosen up some more, as she did on her hilarious debut, Big Science,
she might become a pop star with a difference; if she continues to cut the same
issues long after her blade has become dulled, she'll be as vital as Falco. (RS

The Complete Geffen Recordings:
The eighties weren't kind to Joni Mitchell, and the quintessential introspective
singer-songwriter of the Sixties and Seventies disliked them right back. In the
liner notes to this box set of her four albums released between 1982 and 1991,
Mitchell writes, "To be in sync with the times, in my opinion, was to be
degenerating both morally and artistically." Mitchell's Achilles' heel, a
growing self-righteousness, begins to afflict her art. As she sings in "Man to
Man," from 1982's Wild Things Run Fast, "I sure can be phony when I get
scared."
During this unkind epoch, Mitchell is sometimes justifiably terrified. But
mostly she's simply uneven. Wild is particularly inconsistent: "Chinese Cafe," a
vivid adolescent snapshot that builds on the beauty of her Sev |
