Antonello Da Messina: Sicily's Renaissance Master (Metropolitan Museum of Art
Publications) - Barbera, Gioacchino;Christiansen, Keith;Bayer, Andrea:
ISBN: 0300116489 Published: Jan 2006 Format: Paperback Pages: 32 Antonello da
Messina (ca. 1430-1479) was one of the most groundbreaking and influential
painters of the quattrocento. No other Italian artist of the fifteenth-century
responded in such a direct fashion to the great masters of Bruges and Brussels
(including use of their oil technique), to the brilliant Provencal painters, and
to the established giants of Italian art, such as Piero della Francesca and
Mantegna. In so doing he created unique images with a harmonious and geometrical
clarity, yet included exquisite descriptive passages. Although Antonello worked
primarily in Sicily, his travels to Naples and Venice were influential to the
development of his style, and where he in turn had an enormous impact on
painting. "Antonello da Messina: Sicily's Renaissance Master" includes an
informative essay by Giaocchino Barbera and entries on seven works that will be
seen for the first time in the United States as part of a focus exhibition at
The Metropolitan Museum of Art, including Antonello's masterpiece, "The Virgin
of the Annunciation" from Palermo, whose haunting beauty has been compared to
Leonardo da Vinci's "Mona Lisa". Brief Description: Includes an essay and

Portraits of the Renaissance:
Memling, Van Eyck, Antonello da Messina, Raphael, Holbein, Titian, Leonardo ...
these are the greatest names of the Renaissance and symbolize the ultimate in
artistic achievement. Whether Italian, Flemish, or German, all were masters of
the portrait, a style that was popular and much appreciated during the fifteenth
and sixteenth centuries. The genius of these artists allowed them to overcome
the limits of the genre and inscribe the art of portraiture into the universal
history of mankind. Sharply focused, spectacularly reproduced in a large format
volume, and featuring meticulously researched illustrations, this beautiful book
is the first of its kind to shed light on some of the most familiar images in
art history., Art & Art Instruction ; History - Renaissance ; Subjects & Themes

Renaissance - Wundram, Manfred:
ISBN: 3822852961 Published: Dec 2006 Format: Paperback Pages: 96 This book looks
at the rebirth of culture. Art as we know it today could not exist had not the
revolutionary work of the Renaissance artists paved the way. Widely considered
the most important and influential movement in the history of fine arts,
literature, architecture, and science, the Renaissance marked the emergence of
Western civilization from the Middle Ages into the modern era. Beginning in the
14th century in Italy, the movement spread throughout Europe by the late 15th
century, the main centers of fine art activity being in Florence, the Low
Countries, and Germany. For the first time, art became intellectual; influenced
by humanism, artists experimented with secular subjects and revived classical
antiquity. Advances in anatomy and geometry produced more realistic depictions
in terms of space and perspective for the Italians, while new oil painting
techniques made their mark in Flemish painting and woodcuts and engravings were
the specialties of the Germans. Artists featured are: Albrecht Altdorfer, Fra
Angelico, Giovanni Bellini, Hieronymus Bosch, Sandro Botticelli, Pieter Breughel,
Agnolo Bronzino, Vittore Carpaccio, Francois Clouet, Correggio, Lucas Cranach
the Elder, Albrecht Durer, El Greco, School of Fontainebleau, Piero della
Francesca, Domenico Ghirlandaio, Giorgione, Matthias Grunewald, Maerten van
Heemskerck, Hans Holbein the Younger, Fra Filippo Lippi, Lorenzo Lotto, Andrea
Mantegna, Masaccio, Antonello da Messina, Michelangelo, Parmigianino, Pontormo,
Raphael, Luca Signorelli, Tintoretto, Titian, Paolo Uccello, Veronese, and
Leonardo da Vinci. Taschen's "Basic Art Movement and Genre Series" - each book
includes a detailed introduction with approximately 35 photographs, plus a
timeline of the most important events (political, cultural, scientific, etc.)
that took place during the time period. The body of the book contains a
selection of the most important works of the epoch; each is presented on a
2-page spread with a full-page image and, on the facing page, a
description/interpretation of the work, a reference work, portrait of the
artist, quotes, and biographical information. Brief Description: Includes an
