The web of friendships within the Surrealist circle was a key source of inspiration for this close group of artists and writers, and many of their greatest works stem from a collaborative approach to the creative process. 'Surreal People' is a fascinating look at fifteen relationships between the main participants of Surrealism, among them Man Ray and Lee Miller, Jean Arp and Alberto Giacometti, Max Ernst and Joan Mir. The Dada Painters and Poets: An Anthology, Second Edition
:
'The Dada Painters and Poets' offers the authentic answer to the question 'What is Dada?' This incomparable collection of essays, manifestos, and illustrations was prepared by Robert Motherwell with the collaboration of some of the major Dada figures: Marcel Duchamp, Jean Arp, and Max Ernst among others. Here in their own words and art, the principals of the movement create a composite picture of Dada--its convictions, antics, and spirit. First published in 1951, this treasure trove remains, as Jack Flam states in his foreword to the second edition, 'the most comprehensive and important anthology of Dada writings in any language, and a fascinating and very readable book.' It contains every major text on the Dada movement, including retrospective studies, personal memoirs, and prime examples. The illustrations range from photos of participants, in characteristic Dadaist attitudes, to facsimiles of their productions. , Art & Art Instruction ; Criticism ; Commercial - General ; History - Surrealism & Dadaism, The Dada Painters and Poets: An Anthology, Second Edition

Drawing from the Modern: Volume I: 1880-1940
:
Many of the key achievements in art of the last 125 years have been worked out on paper. From pictorial investigations that expanded the possibilities of vision to the invention of entirely new kinds of media, drawing has been the perfect laboratory for avant-garde experimentation. Drawing from the Modern traces such groundbreaking innovation through the unparalleled holdings of the drawings collection of The Museum of Modern Art. Drawing has historically been understood as a mark or line on paper--the record of a bodily gesture, an inscription of the action of the hand, an expression of the mind. Since the 1880s, however, artists have sought to interrupt these seemingly unbreakable links between mark, hand, and imagination. Defying long-held definitions of drawing and rejecting traditional materials, modern artists invented a host of practices, altering not only the field of drawing but artmaking in general. Examining masterworks from the Museum's collection of nearly 7,000 works on paper in three chronological volumes beginning in the 1880s and continuing through today, Drawing from the Modern reconsider artists' repudiation of traditional drafting methods, assault on the use of the single sheet of paper, and introduction of new materials. Going to the heart of avant-garde innovation, all three volumes showcase new formal strategies, including collage, abstraction, chance, and the integration of text and image, as well as new subject matter, including the urban experience, the body, and identity. Volume I, presented here, spans the period from 1880 to 1940, and includes work by such artists as Jean Arp, Hans Bellmer, Paul Cezanne, Arshile Gorky, Georgia O'Keeffe, Odilon Redon, andKurt Schwitters. Volume II, available in Spring 2005, will cover 1940 to 1975, and Volume III, available in Fall 2005, will bring us from 1975 to the present day.

Miro (Basic Art Album S.) (Hardback) - Mink, Janis
:
ISBN: 3822859753 Published: May 2000 Format: Hardback Pages: 96 Joan Miro (1893-1983) is one of the most significant Spanish painters of the 20th century. His early work clearly shows the influence of Fauvism and Cubism. The Catalan landscape also shapes the themes and treatment of these initial works. In his travels, Miro encountered the intellectual avant-garde of his time. His friends included Francis Picabia, Tristan Tzara, Andr Masson, Jean Arp and Pablo Picasso. From the mid-twenties onward, Miro strove to leave direct objective references behind and developed the pictograms that typify his style. The pictures of this period, which include perhaps the most beautiful and significant ones of his whole oeuvre, dispense with spatiality and an unambiguous reference to objects. From now on, the surfaces are defined by numerals, writing, abstract emblems, and playful figures and creatures. Nineteen-forty-four saw the beginning of his extensive graphic oeuvre, ceramics, monumental mural works, and sculptures. In these works, too, the Catalan artist sought the solid foundation of a figurative, symbolic art with orientation as regards content: faces, stars, moons, rudimentary animal forms, letters. Joan Miro developed in several stages his characteristic flowing calligraphic style and his world of forms resembling shorthand symbols. Brief Description: Joan Miro (1893-1983) is one of the most significant Spanish painters of the 20th century. This work depicts the evolution of his work - from the early influence of Fauvism and Cubism to the later sculpture, murals and the development of his characteristic flowing calligraphic style.

Dada (Themes & Movements S.) (Hardback)
:
ISBN: 0714844233 Published: Oct 2006 Format: Hardback Pages: 304 Dada developed in distinct periods and locations, providing the structure of the book. From Europe and New York during the First World War it spread to Eastern Europe and Japan in the 1920s. Its re-emergence as Neo-Dada in the 1950s and influence on Fluxus in the 1960s was linked to emigres such as Marcel Duchamp and Hans Richter. Survey: International Dada expert Rudolf Kuenzli surveys Dada in its historical context and examines its significant impact and resonance in art and culture today. Linking visual art, performance and literature, this is a fresh treatement of Dada as the Dadaists saw it. A reassessment of one of the twentieth century's most revolutionary movements in the arts, Kuenzli's clear style is accessible to the scholar and the general reader. Works: Each image is accompanied by an extended caption. The book is organized chronologically and geographically around major explosions of Dada activity. From its inception in Zurich during the First World War, we follow Dada to New York, Berlin, Hannover, Cologne, Paris, Central and Eastern Europe, and Japan, finally looking at Neo-Dada. It is a roll-call of the avant-garde: Hugo Ball at the Cabaret Voltaire, Jean Arp's Automatic Drawing; Marcel Duchamp's readymades and Man Ray's assemblages; Francis Picabia's paintings linking machine and human form; collage with political comment from Raoul Hausmann and Hannah Hoch; Kurt Schwitter's all-encompassing concept of Merz; Max Ernst; from the East, the graphics of Lajos Kassak and El Lissitzky; Okada Tatsuo's constructions and fireworks attached to the cover of Mavo magazine. A look at Neo- Dada includes Robert Rauschenberg's "Erased de Kooning" and the Happenings of Hi Red Center. Documents include a comprehensive collection of original Dada writings, researched at the International Dada Archive and sourced from around the world. Poetry, manifestos and statements are presented together with letters between Tristan Tzara and Marcel Duchamp; Beatrice Wood describes 'The Richard Mutt Case' (the first exhibition of a urinal) to her readers of "The Blind Man in 1917"; and in recent interviews artists such as Allan Kaprow and Arman relate their Dada inheritance. Contents: Survey by Rudolf Kuenzli Works: Zurich, New York, Berlin, Hannover and Holland, Cologne, Paris, Central and Eastern Europe, Japan, Neo-Dada Documents: Zurich, New York, Berlin, Hannover and Holland, Cologne, Paris, Central and Eastern Europe, Japan, Neo-Dada Artists' Biographies Authors' Biographies Bibliography Index Brief Description: Surveys Dada in its historical context, and examines its impact and resonance in art and culture. Linking visual art, performance and literature, this is a fresh treatment of Dada. This book is organized chronologically and geographically around major explosions of Dada activity.
