Yours in Food, John Baldessari:
In John Baldessari's new book, Yours in Food, the founding member of the
conceptual art movement explores America at the table, savoring the nuances of
breaking bread in carefully composed vignettes culled appropriated video and
film. Reflections on food and eating specially commissioned from a smorgasbord
of contemporary writers on culture and the arts, from novelist David Eggers to
musician David Byrne, offer up the perfect accompaniment to Baldessari's work.
Paired with his images, these humorous, insightful, and, in some cases, bizarre
meditations investigate one of the most fundamental and telling of all human
experiences. A visual and intellectual feast, Yours in Food is sure to entertain
and delight readers of fiction, art history, and cultural criticism and all
lovers of food.

Bow Down:
The two axes of this new collection of poetry by noted author Douglas Messerli
are the art of Los Angeles artist John Baldessari and the work of contemporary
Italian poets. Dedicated to poet Amelia Rosselli, who committed suicide in 1996,
'Bow Down' is, in part, a writing through numerous translations of contemporary
Italian poetry along with Messerli's specific responses to Baldessari's art.
Like the artist, the poet shares a method of collage which points at culture and
political aspects of the world. The result is 'to continue expectations that you
might and would surely have what you and everyone else too knew was impossible,
impossible.', Poetry ; General, Bow Down

Beer, Art and Philosophy: The Art of Drinking Beer with Friends Is the Highest
Form of Art:
Tom Marioni's 1970 exhibition, 'The Art of Drinking Beer with Friends is the
Highest Form of Art, was a forerunner of a type of Conceptual art prevalent
today that involves eating, drinking, and other social activities. In this book,
a memoir, Marioni demystifies and defines Conceptual art and answers the
question, 'What is art for?' Thomas McEvilley, in the introduction, enlarges the
historic context, comparing early Conceptual art activities in New York to the
work of California artists like Marioni and John Baldessari, who embraced
directness and humor and overleapt New York to find an audience in Europe. Of
Marioni's writing, McEvilley says, 'A fact is stated after a fact, and the
meaning of putting them together comes through with a direct clarity like
seeing.', Art & Art Instruction ; General ; Criticism, Beer, Art and Philosophy:

Nichts, Katalog zur Ausstellung in der Kunsthalle Schirn, Frankfurt a. M., 2006.
Dtsch.-Engl.:
Stillness, emptiness, silence, the pause, the gap, the omission--all these
visual moments of silence are increasingly significant in today's society of
images. They first emerged into contemporary art with avant-garde forces of the
1960s and 70s including John Baldessari and the Art & Language movement, which
used these ideas to express their growing skepticism about depicting a reality
that seemed increasingly complex and difficult to grasp. Since then, artists
have often responded to the daily increasing quantity of visual information by
emptying the image. Today, Postminimalists and Neoconceptualists like Joklle
Tuerlinckx, Tom Friedman and Martin Creed are transforming the experience of
nothingness in installations, paintings and sculpture, and in ways that range
from the poetic to the ironic. A gaze into the void unveils the peripheral, the
ephemeral and the latent. What remains is a diverse, shimmering nothing.,

Pulcherrimate Strade: Contemporary Art in Historical Spaces:
Friuli Venezia Giulia is a region in the north-east of Italy, bordered by
Austria and Yugoslavia, and dotted with vineyards, seaside resorts, Gothic
duomos, Romanesque towns, grottoes, contemporary art, and Roman ruins. Many of
these elements in the landscape have been around for hundreds of years, but one
has not. contemporary art. Yet throughout this region works by Marina Abramovic,
John Armleder, John Baldessari, Mike Bidlo, Louise Bourgeois, Paul McCarthy,
Enzo Cucchi, Jenny Holzer, Tom Sachs, Andres Serrano, and Lawrence Weiner
amongst others have occupied castles, squares, gardens, churches, landmark
buildings, basements, and kitchens. The result is a subtly transformed landscape
worth visiting, be it in reproduction or in Italy. The book itself is a
fantastic object, realized with a semi-flexible plastic cover, held together by
screws, and filled with an array of gadgets., Art & Art Instruction ; History -

Tony Oursler:
A student of John Baldessari's at the California Institute of the Arts and a
frequent collaborator with Mike Kelley, Tony Oursler plumbs popular and punk
culture for the twisted icons that structure our collective unconscious and the
ideology of our time. Working in installations, video, sculpture, and a variety
of mixed media including dolls and puppets, Oursler creates fragmentary images
and scenes that might belong to the hallucinations of a delinquent adolescent on
a bad trip. The viewer is left to imagine what ungodly narrative was frozen in
time to create such surreal, but somehow uncomfortably familiar, mayhem. Though
darkly humorous, his work delves deeply into the question of how the twinned
forces of sex and violence, gender and power function in our culture. This
catalogue presents a range of recent work and accompanies his one-person
exhibition in Milan, Italy., Art & Art Instruction ; Individual Artist ; Popular

Sean Snyder, Katalog zu den Ausstellungen in De Appel, Amsterdam, Neue Kunst
Halle, Sankt Gallen, Portikus Frankfurt u. Secession Wien:
More than any other artist of his generation, the Los Angeles-based conceptual
artist John Baldessari explores the relationship between reading and seeing,
between language and image. In this small, provocative artist's book, Baldessari
presents 16 supposedly evocative colors along with the names that they were
given by the American paint companies that produced them. Across from each solid
colored left-hand page, the right page offers the color's title, creating a
concrete poem in four parts. For example, in part one, 'Organic Order' stands
beside a mulchy green, 'Creative Thinker' is paired with a deep purple, 'Avant
Garde' goes with mustard yellow, and 'Abstract' is across from sea-green.
Further on we learn that warm peachy-pink stands for 'Love and Happiness,' while
warm pinky-peach represents 'Beautiful in My Eyes.' Source companies include
Pratt & Lambert, Benjamin Moore and Pantone. , Ausstellungskatalog / Kunst (seit

Heartways : The Exploits of Genny O (ArsenalAdvance):
Heartways, a collaboration between the Whitney Museum of American Art,
Printed Matter, Inc., and Arsenal Pulp Press through its ArsenalAdvance imprint,
is a faux romance compilation that deconstructs art, -literature, sex, and
desire in one fell swoop. Emulating a "novel," each chapter is written by a
different contributor, all of whom create romantic tableaux that simultaneously
work within and outside literary conventions.
Heartways is the turgid, winsome tale of Genny O, a youthful innocent
who is fated to everlasting virginity. Despite all efforts to the contrary, each
deflowering is her "first time." With both drama and humor, we encounter Genny O
as she tries to find what she is lacking in the arms of her artist object of
desire.
Heartways is the brain child of internationally acclaimed artist Rita
McBride. Rebellious in conceit and execution, it will take you down the road of
love and romance to a place in your heart that you always knew was there. . . .
This book is only the first of a planned four-volume series, each book
steeped in a particular genre and making use of a collective structure.
Forthcoming titles include Crimeways, Futureways and Myways
and include more than 50 different contributions by artists, architects,
writers, journalists, curators, and critics.
Contributors include: John Baldessari, Erin Cosgrove, Douglas Coupland,
Fabio, Michele Hierholzer, Rita McBride, Jennifer Nelson, Cate Rimmer, Joe
Scanlan, Kimberly Sexton, Kathy Slade and Michael Turner.
Rita McBride is a renowned conceptual artist whose work ranges from
architectural sculptures to unorthodox book projects. She was the recipient of
the Rome Prize, the DAAD Berlin, a Guggenheim Fellowship, and was on a team
shortlisted for the World Trade Center Site Memorial Competition.
